It is 8 in the morning. You pick up the shop phone and instead of last night's orders there is a plain screen saying this account can't use WhatsApp. Or your number is on the official platform and your staff tell you the dashboard has shown failed messages since midnight. Meanwhile two customers have already called your personal number asking why nobody replied.
We have sat with owners in exactly this moment, and the urge is always the same: reinstall the app, buy a new SIM, find someone on Facebook who says they can unban numbers. Each of those can make things worse. This guide is about the next 24 hours only: what the screen is actually telling you, what to do and in what order, and what never to do while you wait. Stopping a ban before it happens is a different job, and our guide to WhatsApp automation without getting banned covers it.
People use the word "ban" for four different situations. Each has a different fix, so match what you see to one of these before you do anything.
This is a temporary ban. It usually appears when the number was used with a modified app like GB WhatsApp or WhatsApp Plus, or with a tool that logs in like a phone to send messages in bulk. WhatsApp's own advice is to move to the official app before the timer ends. Keep using the same tool and a temporary ban can turn permanent.
This is a ban on the app itself. You cannot open your chats from that number until the decision changes. The Request review button is your one official way to ask for another look. Do not press it yet. Read the rest of this guide first.
If you are on the official WhatsApp Business Platform (the API), open WhatsApp Manager inside your Meta Business account. A restricted number might show a lower quality rating, a flag, a lower messaging limit, or a notice that it cannot start new conversations for a period. Replies to customers who message you first often still go out. This is the mildest case, and it usually means people have been blocking or reporting your messages.
This is the serious one. Meta has disabled the account that holds your numbers and templates, usually for a policy reason such as what you sell. Open Business Support Home, or search for Account Quality in Meta Business Suite, to see the reason category and whether a review is offered. Every number inside that account stops sending.
Not every ban comes from bulk sending. Two cases from our own work changed how we look at this first day.
The first was a business selling paid gaming services and social media followers. The number was connected to the official platform the proper way. Within a day, Meta disabled the WhatsApp Business account under the Commerce Policy. A new number was then added to the same disabled account, and it was blocked too. No setting, on our side or theirs, could have prevented it. The problem was what was being sold, not how the messages were sent.
The second client's number was restricted after sending only a handful of messages. Volume was not the cause here either. The number had a history of its own before it came to us, and what the business sold played its part.
So before you blame a tool or a staff member, look at two things. What does the business sell, and what has this number been used for in the past? If either one is the real cause, a new SIM will not help, and neither will a beautifully written review.
Nobody can tell you how long a review will take, and your customers should not feel the gap.
Send the review only after the cause is fixed. On the app, Request review usually starts a short flow where WhatsApp may verify the number with a code and then let you add a few lines. On the API side, the review option sits next to the policy action in Business Support Home or Account Quality.
Keep it short and true. Say who you are, what the business does, what likely went wrong, and what you have changed. No legal threats, no long sad story, no denying something that clearly happened. Something like this:
We are a home appliance shop in Lahore and use this number to answer customer orders and delivery questions. Last week a staff member used a bulk sending tool to message an old customer list. We have stopped using that tool, deleted the list, and will only message customers who contact us or agree to receive updates. Please review this number.
Send it once. Pressing the button again and again does not move you up a queue, and it can make the request look automated. And be realistic: if the honest cause is that you sell something the Commerce Policy restricts, a review will not change the policy. Your time is better spent deciding how the business will reach customers without that product on WhatsApp.
Treat it like it is on probation. For the first few weeks, reply to people who message you rather than broadcasting. Add a clear opt-out line to any promotion, send only to people who agreed to hear from you, and grow slowly. If you are on the API, check the quality rating in WhatsApp Manager every few days.
Accept it and rebuild properly rather than fighting the decision with fresh SIMs. Collect customers with their permission: a click to WhatsApp button on your website, a QR code at the counter, a line printed on your delivery bags. People who message you first are the healthiest start any number can have.
Either way, the rebuild is usually where we come in. When we set up a number after a ban, we start with a business check of what is sold and where the number has been, before connecting anything, because both of our hardest cases came down to exactly those two things. The number then runs on the official platform through WhatsApp Coexistence, so the Business App stays on your phone while AI answers customers who message you, with warm-up guidance, a link guard and automatic opt-out handling. What we cannot do is get a banned number back, and we will not pretend otherwise.
If you are in that first day right now, send us your screenshots. Get in touch or message us on WhatsApp at 0339 4285556, and we will tell you honestly which of the four situations you are in and what can still be done.

It means the number has been banned from the app, usually for activity WhatsApp believes breaks its terms, such as bulk sending, spam reports or a modified app. The screen normally offers a Request review option. Screenshot it, fix the cause, and only then send one review.
A temporary ban shows a countdown timer in the app, and the length varies. WhatsApp does not publish a fixed duration. Use the time to uninstall any modified app or tool and switch to the official app, because carrying on can make the ban permanent.
Sometimes, but nobody can guarantee it. WhatsApp decides after a review. Your chances are better when the cause is already fixed and your request explains it honestly in a few lines.
There is no fixed time. Some businesses hear back quickly, others wait longer, and the answer may come as a notification in the app or an email. Sending the same request again does not speed it up.
While the ban is in place you cannot open your chats on that number. If the ban is lifted and you had a Google Drive or iCloud backup, you may be able to restore it. Keeping customer records in a CRM means a ban never takes your whole customer list with it.
You can register another number, but if the cause was how you send or what you sell, the new number usually ends up restricted too. On the API side, a new number added to a disabled business account can be blocked as well. Fix the cause first.
When it happens that fast, the reason is usually the business itself, for example selling something the Commerce Policy restricts, such as followers or real money gambling. Check Business Support Home or Account Quality in Meta Business Suite for the reason category and whether a review is offered.
Volume is not the only signal. The number's past use, what the business sells and whether people blocked or reported the first messages can all lead to a restriction. AMEVIX has seen a number restricted after a handful of messages for exactly these reasons.
No. Nobody outside WhatsApp controls the decision, and many paid unban offers are scams that ask for your six digit code. Use only the official review option and never share that code.
Often yes. A restriction on the WhatsApp Business Platform usually limits starting new conversations, while replies to customers who message you first can still go out. Check WhatsApp Manager to see exactly what the restriction covers.
