Open ChatGPT and type the question your best customer types before they call anyone: "Who installs solar panels for homes in Islamabad?" or "Which clinic in DHA Lahore does teeth whitening?" Then ask the same thing in Perplexity and in Google, where an AI Overview often sits above the normal results. Read the names that come back. If yours is missing, this plan is for you.
The work of getting into those answers has two labels. GEO (generative engine optimization) means making your business easy for AI tools to understand, trust and mention. AEO (answer engine optimization) means writing pages that answer real questions directly, so a snippet, a voice assistant or an AI summary can lift the answer. In practice it is one job, and it sits on top of ordinary SEO. Google has said publicly that there are no special extra requirements for AI Overviews: a page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet in normal search. Many assistants also search the web live before they answer.
So here is a plan you can run this month, week by week, without buying new software. Each phase makes the next one more useful, so try not to skip ahead.
Before you change anything, record where you stand. Otherwise, in two months you will have a feeling instead of a comparison.
Pay attention to the sources, not only the business names. If the AI keeps citing a directory, a news story or a Facebook group thread, that tells you where it looks for your industry. You will use that list in Week 4.
One more check: open your website analytics and look at referrals. Visits from chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai show up there for many sites. It will not show every mention, but it gives you a starting number.
This is the dull part, and the part most people skip. We learned it on our own website. When we looked at our Google data, our pages were sitting around position 70. The writing was not the main problem. Our canonical tags and our sitemap pointed Google to addresses that redirected somewhere else, so Google kept getting mixed signals about which version of each page was the real one. Fixing that came before we wrote a single new article.
A canonical tag is one line in a page's code that says "this is the main address of this page". A sitemap is a file that lists the pages you want search engines to find. If either one points to an address that redirects, you are sending crawlers on a detour, and AI tools that depend on search indexes inherit the confusion.
Check these in Google Search Console, or ask your developer to:
When we take on web development or SEO work for a client, this check comes first for exactly that reason. Content written on top of a broken setup gets far less benefit than it should.
An AI tool that finds two phone numbers and three spellings of your business name has no way to know which is true, so it often plays safe and mentions someone else.
Write one master version of your details: exact business name, address, landline, WhatsApp number, opening hours, service areas and what you do in one sentence. Then go through every place you appear and make them match: the website footer and Contact page, Google Business Profile, Facebook, your Instagram bio, LinkedIn and any directories. Old listings from a previous address are the most common problem. If you moved from Saddar to Clifton years ago and one directory still shows Saddar, fix it or ask for it to be removed.
While you are on the website, add a plain summary near the top of the homepage and About page. For example: "We install home solar systems in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, and handle design, installation and net metering paperwork." Short, factual and easy to quote. Compare that with "We deliver world class energy solutions", which gives an AI nothing to repeat.
Do not rewrite the whole site. Pick the service that brings in the most money and give it one strong page. Once that works, repeat the pattern for the next service.
If the page is about AC servicing in Lahore, the opening should say what you do, where, for whom and roughly how it works. AI tools tend to lift short statements that make sense on their own. A page that opens with three paragraphs about your passion for customer service makes them dig, and they usually do not bother.
"How long does a gas refill take?", "Do you service inverter ACs?", "Which areas do you cover?" When a heading asks a real question and the paragraph under it answers in two or three sentences, you have done most of the AEO work already.
Many business sites show prices, service areas or hours only inside a banner image or a PDF menu. Machines read text far more reliably than pictures. If a fact matters, write it on the page as well.
Schema is a small block of hidden code that labels your information for machines: this is the business name, this is the address, this is a question and this is its answer. Use LocalBusiness or Organization on the homepage, Service on service pages and FAQPage where you have FAQs, then test it with Google's Rich Results Test. Schema does not force a citation. It removes guesswork.
Your WhatsApp history is the best FAQ source you have. Take the questions customers keep repeating and answer each in two to four sentences. Avoid "contact us for details" unless there is genuinely no general answer. If prices vary, say what they depend on.
If all your services are crammed into one long page, splitting them into focused landing pages usually helps both search and AI answers, because each page then has one clear subject.
AI answers lean heavily on what others say about a business, especially for "best" and "near me" questions. A business that only talks about itself looks thin. This part takes the longest to pay off, so start it now even though the results come later.
Never buy reviews. It breaks Google's rules, can get your profile penalised, and fake praise rarely sounds like a real customer anyway.
Run your Week 1 questions again once a month, in the same tools, and update the sheet. Look for movement in three places: are you named, are your pages linked as sources, and are referral visits from AI tools are growing in analytics. Keep an eye on your normal Google rankings and Search Console clicks too, because AI visibility tends to follow them.
Be honest with yourself about time. Technical fixes and matching business details can be done in the first few weeks. Trust from reviews, mentions and content builds over months, and depends on how crowded your city and industry are. A solar installer in a smaller city may move faster than a dental clinic in central Lahore.
Be wary of anyone who promises to "get you into ChatGPT in 30 days". Google, OpenAI and Perplexity decide how their systems pick sources, and the same question can produce a different answer tomorrow, or for a user in another city. What you control is how clear, consistent and trusted your business looks. That raises your chances. It does not guarantee a placement, and anyone who says otherwise is guessing.
The reassuring part: none of this is wasted. The same fixes help your normal Google rankings and the customer who simply lands on your website.
Do two things. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google the three questions your best customers ask, and screenshot the answers. Then open Google Search Console and check whether your sitemap and canonical tags point to addresses that redirect. Those two checks tell you whether your first job is content or plumbing.
If you would like a second pair of eyes, our SEO team can run the question test and the technical checks with you. Start with a website audit and we will show you, in plain language, what to fix first.

AEO (answer engine optimization) is about giving direct answers to questions, for example in Google featured snippets and voice assistants. GEO (generative engine optimization) is about being understood and cited by AI tools that write full answers, like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. The work overlaps so much that most small businesses can treat them as one plan.
Yes. Most AI tools find pages through search indexes, and Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a normal snippet to appear in AI Overviews. If your site is slow or not indexed, AI tools struggle to use it. SEO is the foundation that GEO sits on.
There is no fixed timeline. Technical fixes, matching business details and schema can be done in a few weeks, but trust from reviews, mentions and useful content usually builds over several months. How competitive your industry and city are makes a big difference.
No. OpenAI, Google and Perplexity control how their systems choose sources, and the answers change from day to day. An honest agency can improve your chances by making your business clear and trusted online, but it cannot promise a placement. Treat any guarantee as a warning sign.
Make a list of 15 to 20 questions your customers actually ask and try them in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google once a month. Note who is named and which pages are linked, and keep screenshots. You can also look in your analytics for referral visits from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai.
Often the cause is technical rather than content. Check Google Search Console for pages that are not indexed, and make sure your sitemap and canonical tags point to addresses that load directly instead of redirecting. Also check that robots.txt or a security plugin is not blocking crawlers.
Schema labels facts like your business name, address, hours, services and FAQs in a format machines read easily. It does not guarantee a citation, but it removes guesswork and supports normal search features too. It is a small fix that is worth doing on every key page.
They can, especially for "best" and "near me" questions, where AI answers often draw on what customers say. A steady flow of honest reviews, with a reply from you on each one, helps customers and AI tools trust you. Never buy fake reviews, as it breaks Google rules.
If you want to be cited in AI answers, blocking the crawlers these tools use to search the web can make you invisible to them. Check robots.txt and firewall settings with your developer so nothing is blocked by accident. Blocking bots used only for AI training is a separate choice.
It depends on the size of your site, how much content needs fixing or writing, and whether you want ongoing monthly work. Many first steps, like matching your listings and adding FAQs, you can do yourself. For AMEVIX DIGITAL packages, see our pricing page or ask for a quote after an audit.
